Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Part of a collection of black and white film negatives of staff and patients at Hensol Hospital, about 1970-2. The images were taken by Richard J. Gaunt who did voluntary work at the hospital when he was a student at Cardiff University.
Hensol opened in 1930 as a long-stay hospital for people with a learning disability under the provisions of the 1913 Mental Deficiency Act. Patients were housed in one of 12 wards, and at its busiest the site was home to over 800 people with a range of support needs. The hospital closed in 2003.
