Roman pottery jar

Described in the archive as: Jar in Black Burnished Ware, burnt grey and orange. Of Bird Oswald (Birley and ? 1930?) nos. 39-41. Hadrianic. The type does however appear on the South-West in pre-Hadrianic contexts. Cf. Darling 1977 fig 6.12, nos. 3 & 6. All the vessels from context 031 are represented by a large number of fragments and in view of their proximity to grave 049., could well be the remains of a grave deposit. An early or early/mid 2nd Century A.D. date of deposition seems likely.
