Silver medal awarded as a prize at the 1838 Cymreigyddion y Fenni eisteddfod for an essay on how to encourage children to read and write in Welsh.
Cymreigyddion y Fenni is a society founded in 1833 to promote Welsh language and culture in Monmouthshire. One of the main aims of the Society was to hold eisteddfodau. These were so popular that a hall was purpose-built in Abergavenny to accommodate them. The main patron of the eisteddfodau was Lady Llanover. A wide range of competitions were held – such as poetry, essay writing, harp playing and craftwork.
