Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Axle-cap of gunmetal, from a chariot or wagon of Late Iron Age or early Romano-British date (AD50-200). The hoop has two rows of radial spikes around its circumference and incised ladder decoration around the centre and margins.
Site Name: Undy, Monmouthshire
Notes: Found and retrieved in 1995 at Undy Great Field, Vinegar Hill, Undy as developers were earth-moving at an early phase of a new housing development. The artefact was found in the foundations, or beneath, a small square building of Roman date, with an under-floor hypocaust. This was in the vicinity of a second larger building and the Undy Roman coffin burial (96.27H). No archaeological investigation of this building complex was undertaken in advance of this development.
