Canvas ground embroidered with black and beige silks and red, green and yellow (faded) wools in cross stitch. At the top flanked by formal flowering plants is the verse 'Martha Balment is my name / And with my needle I work the same...' Beneath is a horizontal wavy stem with rose-buds. The bottom half of the sampler has three formal flowering plants and and inscription. Plain black chamfered wood frame. Made by Martha Balment, aged 11, 1848.
