Brecon Castle (photograph)

Salted paper print (from calotype negative). View of Brecon castle and bridge over the River Honddu.

The building dominating this image is the romantic ruin of the Great Hall of Brecon Castle in the heart of this historic market town. The castle was originally founded in 1093 by Bernard de Neufmarche, the brother of William the Conqueror. The castle overlooks the bridge over the River Honddu (from which its Welsh name Aberhonddu derives) as it joins the River Usk. Just to the left of the Castle can be seen the Brecon Castle Hotel which at this date was one of the premier hotels in the town. Calvert Jones was in Brecon in September 1846 visiting his wife’s aunt who was ill. He took over 40 views, and it is possible that this photograph was taken then.
