Roman building structural timber
Quartered and trimmed structural timber of markedly trapezoidal section, halved obliquely at one end as if for a lap-joint but without trace of peg or nail. Faint marks impressed into the grain near the transverse cut, if deliberate as carpenter's marks, may read XI or ] XI. Reused as pile for Well 2.
