Roman copper alloy seal box

A seal box in the shape of a leaf. The large projecting hinge was secured by an iron pivot. At the lower tip of the leaf there is a projection at the end of the lid with a small knob underneath. This knob fits into a corresponding well, in a similar projection at the end of a seal box base, to form a fastening. Thea seal box lid is flat and the base of alone forms the container. T base is pierced with three holes and has two notches in its walls to receive the string or cord, the knots of which it was designed to protect. The lid has moulded and incised line decoration to give the effect of a leaf.
