Box churn

Churn is a coopered container with four iron hoops around the staves. Handles of iron on both ends. Protruding from one end is the threaded end of the shaft on which the paddles are mounted. A dog wheel (31.66) was attached to the end of this shaft whilst on display, but a handle would have been attached to it originally. The paddle is made of two X's of wood with holes through their centres and rods fixed between the arms. A square section iron shaft (axle) passes through the centre of the X's. One of the ends of the X's has been repaired with a patch of tin plate. The lid is made from two pieces of wood butted together and held by two battens fixed across the join. A third batten is fixed across the other two to make a handle. The churn and lid are painted blue. [R.Pearce, 11/11/2005]

Oak, rectangular box, painted dark blue-green with applied metal handles to sides. Flat lid with strap handles to sides. Flat lid with strap handle. 4-blade horizontal paddle rotting on its metal axis, turned by an external metal handle and driven by external gearing mechanism (S. Minwel Tibbott's catalogue)
