Cheese-stand

South Wales Pottery

Cheese stand, earthenware, standing on a wide, spreading pedestal foot, the foot rim lobed, the upper part of the stand rising from the foot with shallow cushion-moulded sides, forming a shallow sided platter, the outer rim moulded in waved lobes; transfer-printed in pale blue with the 'Damask Border' pattern; in the centre, two male figures in Renaissance style dress in an Italianate landscape, behind them, Italianate buildings, peaked mountains, a viaduct or bridge, the figures surrounded by rocks, foliage and small trees, the whole within a scalloped egg and dart effect border made up of semi-circles and triangles, this scene surrounded with the Damask effect pattern, made up of closely spaced meandering and undulating lines giving the effect of Damask or watered silk, this surmounted by highly ornate scrolled foliate cartouches, large and small, with dotted pale blue grounds, of the larger, one with a reindeer pulling a male figure in a sled, one of a hunter with a dog and a large bow, the smaller with running dogs, all the scenes suggesting snowy, Arctic conditions, the outer rim with a repetition of the Damask border in a thin band between ornately scrolled outer edges, this border also to the underside of the outer rim and to the foot rim.
