Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Complete lamp of Loeschcke type IV. Fine condition lacking only chips from discus and rim. Crisp chalk-white ware, no inclusions or mica; mottled orange or chestnut-brown slip with metallic sheen, darkening to brown-black in grooves and splashes. Voluted nozzle, sooted, with small breather-hole. Discus decorated in relief with rosette of four bilobate petals; central oil-hole, all encircled by two raised lines, then rim-band.
Rosettes such as this were common decoration for lamps made at this time (late 1st Century A.D.) and have been found in other areas of Caerleon such as the amphitheatre.
