Dynamo

Vertical steam engine and dynamo from SIMSON III floating crane barge. Serial no. '19445'. Originally misidentified as being off the SEA ALARM.

The vertical engine and dynamo, generated power for lighting on the floating crane Simson III which was based in Cardiff Docks, but worked in the other South Wales ports when required. On board ship, or on floating cranes as in this instance, steam engines were often mounted in a vertical rather than a horizontal position in order to conserve space. (Source: Welsh Industrial & Maritime Museum Guidebook, 1984).
