Puppet

Ayre, Mr & Mrs E.M. (Maker)

Puppet called Blodwen. Carved wooden head and hands. Dressed in traditional Welsh costume, holding wool for spinning in right hand.

The puppets in this collection were presented to the Welsh Folk Museum by Mr and Mrs E.M. Ayre who managed the ‘Mario Puppet Players’. This group of players toured extensively in South Wales during the 1930s and 1940s performing at the invitation of local organizations mainly.

Two puppets were donated by Mr and Mrs Ayre in 1943 and these were known as ‘Eudaf’ and ‘Helen Luyddog’ who were characters in the tale from the Mabinogion – 'The Dream of Macsen Wledig'.

The remaining puppets and stage props were donated to the Welsh Folk Museum in 1961, together with a photograph album which includes scenes from performances. The collection also includes certificates of merit, letters, programmes, and pamphlets on the making of puppets.

The puppets, costumes, and props were made by Mr and Mrs Ayre and they date from 1938-1941.
