S.S. EMBIRICOS Off Dover (painting)

Mohrmann, John Henry (Artist)

Starboard view of the S.S. EMBIRICOS with white cliffs of Dover in background and sailing boat to left. Signed and dated bottom right.

The Embiricos was completed in 1893 by Sir Raylton Dixon of Middlesborough for Alcibiades Embiricos of Andros, Greece. In 1896, another member of the family, Stamatios, came to Cardiff, and he often ‘fixed’ the Embiricos to load a cargo at the booming coal port. In this picture, however, the vessel is seen in the Straits of Dover, probably bound for Dunkirk with a cargo of grain from a Black Sea port. Cwblhawyd yr Embiricos ym 1893 gan Syr Raylton Dixon o Middlesborough ar gyfer Alcibiades Embiricos, Andros, Gwlad Groeg. Ym 1896, daeth aelod arall o'r teulu, Stamatios, i Gaerdydd, a byddai'n aml yn 'trefnu' i'r Embiricos lwytho cargo yn y porthladd glo ffyniannus hwn. Culfor Dover yw cefndir y llun hwn, fodd bynnag, ac mae'n debygol fod y llong ar ei ffordd i Dunkirk gyda llwyth o rawn o un o borthladdoedd y Môr Du.
