Three-panelled chest with shallow carving and overall pattern. Dated 1686 and initialled 'I. P'.
Three-panelled chest with shallow carving and overall pattern. The flowing scroll design is unusual and forms a double-heart shape on the front panels, indicating that it may well have been a marriage chest. The faintly-carved date, ‘1686’ with initials ‘I P’ could relate to the bride who once owned it, or possibly the hand that carved the piece. It originates from Breconshire, but similar carvings can be found in church woodowrk in bordering Radnorshire.
