S.S. RAMILLIES, negative

One of the last steamships owned at Cardiff was the handsome Ramillies, owned by John Cory & Sons from 1955 until 1966. Built at West Hartlepool in 1951 for London-Greek shipowners, she was an oil-fired steamer of 55,890 gross tons. She is seen here discharging iron ore at the East Moors terminal in the Roath Dock, c. 1964.

Built 1951 as SEAWALL by William Gray & Co., West Hartlepool (with triple expansion engine by Central Marine Engine Works, Hartlepool), for Matapan Shipping Co. (Lykiardopulo & Co), London. 1955 – Sold to British Steam Shipping Co. (John Cory & Sons, Cardiff), and renamed RAMILLIES. 1966 – Sold to Pakistan National Shipping Corporation, and renamed SURMA. She was bombed and sunk at Chaina by Indian aircraft on 12th December 1971. John Cory & Sons
