Oenochoe

Oenochoe or kyathos of pale red earthenware, standing on a flat base, bulbous lower body, then rising cylindrically, flaring and ending in a wide everted mouth; broad, flat, high loop handle, with central horizontal support; the lower body painted dark brown, surmounted by concentric dark brown banding, interspersed by a band of geometric patterning of interlocking lozenges, each with a central dot; the upper body with a large panel, to one side, a naively painted male stick figure, holding a spear or a staff in one hand and tools or weapons in the other, leading a horse, the horse surmounted by two squat duck-type birds and with a stork-type bird below, a swastika between the upper birds, two circular dot motifs either side of the figure, in the centre, vertical strips of geometric patterning, two of guilloche-style circles, one of continuous chevrons, to the other side, another male stick figure with a spear leading a male horse with upright spiky mane, again surmounted by two squat birds, a swastika above the male figure, circular dot motifs interspersing the birds and below the horse a larger radiating dot motif, the entire panel bordered at either end with repeats of the chevron and guilloche strips; the panel surmounted by four broad concentric bands interspersed with a repeat of the geometric lozenges, with a further two broad bands to the interior of the mouth; the handle broadly painted in dark brown with a pattern of large crosses interspersed with horizontal banding, short banding, giving striped effect to the lip rim and to horizontal handle support; extensively restored and re-painted, the darker areas of painting, the original, the lighter areas, the restoration.
