Cow-creamer

Baker, Bevans and Irwin, Glamorgan Pottery (1813-1839)

Cow-creamer ,earthenware, in the shape of a cow, standing on a rounded oblong base, moulded around the edges to resemble foliage, the cow, with cloven hooves, an udder with four teats, a realistically modelled body with prominent breast bone, two curved horns above the ears, the spout formed by the animal's open mouth, the tail and the tips of both of the horns broken off, the cover missing; transfer printed in black with to one side of the body a rustic scene showing three figures in a boat on a river with a hammock slung on a patch of ground to one side of them and in the background buildings, trees and a dove-house on a high post, to the other side of the body another rustic scene showing two figures fishing in a river with a well to one side and in the background a large building, trees and a distant windmill, to the base of the cow-creamer a smaller rustic scene showing a cottage and trees, a similar scene of a cottage to the cover, the horns, mouth, and hooves all painted in black, a black band around the edge of the base.
