Head of a Woman
This carving simplifies the human head to a series of interlocking sculptural planes. Lipchitz began to carve Cubist heads from 1915. Abstraction from the human form was a common feature in non-western sculpture. Like many artists working in Paris at this time, Lipchitz both admired and collected what was seen as primitive sculpture.
