Chambers, William South Wales Pottery (1839 - 1855)

Plate, earthenware, twelve-sided shape with rounded foot-rim, cushion-moulded sides and spreading rim, the outer rim slightly raised; transfer-printed in brown with to the centre of the well a tavern-like scene showing a group of five men, three seated and two atanding, in a room with stools, tables, and a fireplace in the background, around the sides of the well the inscription "Dost thou love life? then do not squander time. for that is the stuff life is made of. / The sleeping fox catches no poultry - there will be sleeping enough in the grave.", a black band to the outer rim.
