Stephens Silica Brickworks, photograph
Photograph captioned 'Silica Brickworks, Cydweli. Silica bricks were for many years in great demand for use as furnace linings in tinplate works where steel flat bar was heated before rolling. It is, perhaps, strange to find the broken down remains of a mortar mill on the site of such brickworks. During the building of factories and the industrial towns of South Wales, black mortar was greatly used, particularly in the making of boundary and dividing walls behing the many rows of terraced houses. One of the stone wheels used in the mixing of the mortar stands out clearly on the right of the mill.' Mounted on card. Made for the exhibition RECORDING WALES 3 in 1970/1971.
