Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Part of an oak beam or post found in the ditch surrounding Sycharth castle during the 1890s. This motte and bailey castle near Llansilin, Powys, was one of Owain Glyndŵr's homes during the 14th century. Harry of Monmouth - later to become King Henry V - and his forces destroyed it in 1403.
It was decided in 1900 to use the beam in a new Memorial Hall at Llansilin. As it was too long, the beam was sawn to the length required, and three saws were ruined in the process. This section is the off-cut which was donated to the Museum in 1931. During the 1960s, traces of two halls were excavated at Sycharth.
