Medal inscribed 'Salute the Great Coalition 1940-1945. To David Grenfell from Winston Churchill'. In original pouch. Part of a collection relating to the political life of David Rhys Grenfell CBE JP MP.
Formed on 10 May 1940, the 'Great' or 'Churchill coalition' government was an all-party administration in the UK that directed Britain during World War II until May 1945. Replacing Neville Chamberlain after the Norway crisis, Winston Churchill created this unity government, including Conservatives, Labour, and Liberals, to ensure national survival. Grenfell was appointed Secretary for Mines at the Board of Trade, serving from 1940 to 1942.
