Into Africa – The Grand Fallacy

Ronald, Pennell (Engraver)

Deep bowl, rose-tinted over-cased glass, near-vertical sides; wheel engraved with a scene resembling the Garden of Eden, with a man holding a small rhinoceros and being reprimanded by an ‘Eve’-like figure.

Ronald Pennell is one of Britain's foremost glass artists, internationally renowned for his wheel-engraved narrative scenes. The world he conjures up mixes an irreverent sense of humour with sometimes disconcerting messages. In this work, a man holds a small rhinoceros while thinking about its aphrodisiac horn and is reprimanded by a modern ‘Eve’ for what he has done to the Garden of Eden. This comment on human depradation of the natural world has become only more relevant with the passage of time.
