Morse

Evans, Rhiannon (goldsmith and jewellery designer) (Goldsmith)

Robes (mitre, cope, stole, rochet and morse) worn by Dr Rowan Williams on his enthronement as the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury, 27 February 2003. Dr Williams was the first Welshman to lead the Anglican Communion and the first since the 13th century to be appointed from beyond the English Church.

The morse is a square rectangle of stiff material covered with dark yellow silk and pale yellow silk piping at the edges. There is a silver and red gold medallion sewn to the front depicting a Celtic design with a cross in the centre flanked by two dragons - one in red gold, one in silver. The reverse has six white metal hooks used to fasten the morse to the cope. In additio, there is a metal bar with turned over ends used to secure the morse on the reverse.
