Landseer became the most popular animal painter of the nineteenth century and was Queen Victoria's favourite artist. This scene was greatly admired by Géricault at the Royal Academy in 1821. It depicts dogs which belonged to the artist. Brutus, the white terrier, is poised to spring at the rat poking up its head at the bottom right. Boxer the Staffordshire bull terrier, menaces the cage. Vixen, the third dog, looks quizzically at the burrowing ferret. A belt with a pattern of rats lies in the foreground.
