Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
These are remains from the Inhumation Burial of an Adolescent (12-18 years) who's sex is Undetermined The remains are moderately preserved with over 75% remaining.
They were buried in an extended supine position in a simple grave oriented Northwest-Southeast
The burial is from Phase L: 886-1026 AD
SK256 has the only example of Tooth Ankylosis. They display quadrilateral ankylosis of all deciduous second molar roots and a single proximal root was noted on the maxilla's left and right labia sides. Tooth Ankylosis is when the alveolar bone and the cementum or dentin of teeth fuse. The causes of this aren't certain but are often linked to trauma.
Their cranium had Cribia Orbitala, indicating nutritional deficiencies or illness during childhood. Their teeth showed Dental Enamel Hypoplasia which also indicates a phase of interrupted growth during childhood. Periodontal Disease indicates poor oral hygiene.
