S.S. HYPHAESTOS (3917gt). Built 1912 by Robert Duncan & Co., Glasgow and launched as S.S. MARISTON for Mariston Steam Ship Co Ltd (managed by W.S. Miller & Co), Glasgow. 1913 - Bought by 'Romania' Prima Societate Nationala de Navigatiune Maritima, Constanta, and renamed MILCOVUL. 1933 - Sold to Antonios G Yannoulatos & Sons, Piraeus and renamed HYPHAESTOS. 1938 - Sold to Cree Steam Ship Co Ltd (managed by Muir Young Ltd), London. She was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat on 18th October 1940 when she strayed from a convoy from Sydney, Australia to Workington with a cargo of iron ore. Fate Sunk by U-101 (Fritz Frauenheim) Position 57.30N, 11.10W - Grid AM 2921. Complement 36 (36 dead - no survivors). Convoy SC-7. Route Wabana, Conception Bay - Sydney (5 Oct) - Workington. Cargo 5900 tons of iron ore. Notes on loss At 21.12 hours on 18 Oct, 1940, U-101 attacked the convoy SC-7 east-northeast of Rockall and reported two ships sunk. U-101 was only credited with sinking the Creekirk (Master Elie Robilliard). The master, 34 crew members and one gunner were lost.
