Background diapered lozengy with diminutive quatrefoils. To either side of the canopy, dext. a crescent, sin. a star; foliage in field. In base, under a rounded carved arch, an abbot with with staff at prayer, between the initials, R.G. (for Richard of Gainsborough, abbot: 1318-42; in whose time the matrix was eengraved).
