Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
This photograph is one of the most iconic images of America during the Great Depression and represents the first moment Dorothea Lange moved her camera from the studio to the street. Taken in 1933, the photograph captures unemployed men lined up outside a soup kitchen in an area of San Francisco called the White Angel Jungle. The desperation and despair expressed by the man in the centre of the image is palpable as he hunches over an empty tin cup, his face obscured by the wide brim of his hat. Though this photograph was taken in the early 1930s, are there elements that feel familiar to the socio-economic landscape of today?
