Roman gravestone (Q. Julius Severus)
Gravestone with a vertical fracture.
Julius Severus retired with the privileges and status of a veteran (veteranus), and settled close to the fortress. His original home was Dinia in Gaul, now Digne in south-east France.
D(is) M(anibus) / Q(uinti) Iuli Severi / Dinia veterani / leg(ionis) II Aug(ustae) coniux f(aciendum) c(uravit)
‘To the spirits of the departed (and) of Quintus Julius Severus, from Dinia, veteran of the Second Augustan Legion; his wife had this set up.’
