Hand carved lovespoon made by Siôn Llewellyn, Nantymoel, Ogmore Vale. Sycamore with Welsh dresser style top, spoon incorportates a selection of traditional symbols and carving styles, which include fretwork front panel, caged balls, links of chain, barley-twist neck leading to bowl and heart symbol on bowl; daffodil and red dragon symbols are carved at the top of the spoon, while Celtic heart-knot patterns can be seen in the central section.
Lovespoons were traditionally carved by men as love tokens. The custom developed from making spoons for the home. The skill was in carving very intricate lovespoons from one piece of wood using simple tools. Nowadays commercial woodcarvers make lovespoons as souvenirs and for celebrating family events.
