Sugar bowl

Nantgarw China Works (1813 - 1822)

Sugar bowl and cover, soft-paste porcelain, clear white translucency and lustrous glaze. Circular, standing on a shallow rounded foot, flattened bun-shaped body with pronounced mould lines, shallow lip containing the flattened domed lid, and with a pinecone finial and two up-curved loop handles. Decorated with a gilt line at the foot, the lower part of the sides plain below a running border of gilt scrolls and pink enamel dots, band above strewn with gilt dot flower heads on red thread stems with two green leaves, another running border of pink and gilt dots above, deckelled gilt line at the shoulders, below a band of gilt foliage, gilt stars on the handles. The cover decorated similarly, but with the borders reversed and with the green leaves missing from the stylised flowers, a pink rose in the centre around the base of the gilt finial.
