Jug

Dillwyn & Co., Cambrian Pottery (1811 - 1817 and 1824 - 1850)

Jug, earthenware, yellow-glazed, globular form, tapering into a slightly inverted collar neck, angular handle curved into residual thumbpiece, with a straight back and lower side formed of double 'C'; transfer-printed in red with left side of spout ' John Owen Esqr. / Elected for the County of Pembroke / Friday Octr 30th 1812 / after a contest of Eleven Days / against / The Honble John Frederick Cambell Esq. / And a Trio of Peers / And / Created a Baronet Tuesday / Novr 3d 1812'; under spout 'Final state of the pols. / Octr 30th 1812. / of Glorious Memory / Mr Owen - 1529 / Mr Campbell - 1344 / Majority - 185'; shield to right side of spout with a lion rampant crest, the shield supported by a wild man on either side, above a scroll inscribed 'HONESTAS OPTIMA POLITIA' and underneath 'Sir Iohn Owen Bart. MP. for Pembroke'; crude silver lustre collar pattern of acanthus leaves, silver lustre lip, rim and line to handle back.

Printed with the arms of Sir John Owen (1776-1861) of Orielton, Pembrokeshire. He inherited the estates of Sir Hugh Owen in 1809 and in 1812 was elected MP for Pembrokeshire.
