Mat

Jones, Kate (Nova Scotia) (Matmaker)

Hooked rag mat made of various recycled materials and clothing, possibly jumpers and socks on a sacking backing. A border with a key pattern of red, khaki and cream with central area consisting of geometric stars similar to the designs seen on patchwork quilts. Strands of knitted and woven material (wool as well as cotton) pulled through a base of tabby woven Hessian fabric.

Made by Kate Jones in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Won first prize in a competition for the 'Most artistic Foot-mat made of odd-bits of cloth' at the National Eisteddfod in Blaenau Ffestiniog, 1898. Twelve competed in the competition and the first prize was £1.0.0.
