Auger
A twist auger for boring holes 2.8cm/one and one eighth of an inch in diameter. It comprises of a bit (the cutting part), on a shank which ends in a tang to fit into a wooden handle. The screw lead at the tip of the bit pulls the auger through the hole, reducing the amount of pressure required. (Salaman Dictionary of Woodworking Tools)
