Dish and cover

Swansea China Works

Dish and cover, soft-paste porcelain, 'duck egg' type with slight green translucency; almost colourless glaze containing specks of grit under lid and on foot. Dish, round, on low foot rim, shallow spreading sides and everted rim; painted on the exterior with five sprays of pink roses, and on the interior with a large vertical-weave basket with lattice band, overflowing with garden flowers, prominent among them pink and yellow roses and convolvulus, on a background of earth, grass and flowering plants, cavetto with five sprays of pink roses, rim with band of scrolled and seeded gilding and gilt dentil line. Cover, domed, with pineapple finial rising from acanthus collar; painted with two similar baskets of garden flowers, and with two large sprays each of three pink roses below and a band of scrolled and seeded gilding, gilt dentil line to lip, finial partly gilded.
