Roman cockle shell
Cockle shells found in the drain in the fortress baths at Caerleon. Cockle shells were found here in deposits dated from the late 1st century to the end of the 2nd century.
A wider range of shellfish has been found at Caerleon fortress baths than at other Roman sites. This may be because of Caerleon’s close proximity to the Severn estuary where these species could be found.
