During the First World War, Gwen John made a series of portrait drawings of military figures, many of which she sent in portfolios to her patron John Quinn, who offered to sell them for her in New York. The subject here is a French General. John’s image is derived from a photograph which appeared on the cover of L’image de la Guerre in 1916.
