Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Robert Davies of Gwysaney is dressed as a gentleman in his gold-coloured doublet and wide collar. He was High Sheriff of Flintshire, and like most of the Welsh gentry he was a Royalist during the Civil War. The year he sat for this portrait saw the King's cause falter in north-east Wales. Just two years later, Parliamentarians battered their way through the front door of his home and imprisoned Robert for his royalist tendencies.
