Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Model produced by Sir William Halcrow and Partners, Consulting Engineers, showing the watercourses and type of ground which was the reason for the collapse of Tip no. 7 of Merthyr Vale Colliery, Aberfan. Following the Aberfan disaster 1966, the company was engaged by the then National Coal Board to investigate the stability of most tips in their ownership and prepare reports to conform with then current legislation and the Board’s own “Codes and Rules”.
During the late 1970s it was thought a good idea to commission a 3D model of a typical tip complex (apparently based on Marine Colliery) , mainly to illustrate hydrogeological features of hillslopes in south Wales and their association with landslides. The model was shown in exhibitions of the company’s work and was also a feature in the company’s offices.
