Costrel or bottle, very coarse gritty red earthenware, barrel-shaped with all the sides curved except for one end which has been flattened off to allow the costrel to be stood upright on its side, from what would normally be the top of the costrel rises a cylindrical neck which flares out towards the lip-rim, and which is flanked on either side by two roughly moulded handles which are pierced through the centre to allow the costrel to be suspended from something; the whole of the body of the costrel, apart from the flattened side, and the lower portions of the neck and handles is covered with a mottled green glaze.
