Port broadside view of M.V. LA PAMPA at Cardiff Docks, c. 1938.
Built 1938 at the Götaverken yard, Gothenburg, Sweden for Buries Markes Ltd., London. LA PAMPA survived the war with minor scratches. A collar on a derrick post was the only ‘war damage’ and this was done by the inexperienced apprentices firing at the raiding Luftwaffe. They had forgotten that the gun had no stops. A report filed at the PRO also refers to "marks on the ship’s bottom that indicate that an attempt to ram a U-boat on the night of the 23 February 1941 may have been successful". This is believed to be the sinking of the Italian submarine MARCELLO.
