S.S. NEW YORK CITY, negative

Three quarter Port Bow view of S.S. NEW YORK CITY (3), 27 March 1947.

The company of Charles Hill & Sons of Bristol has been associated with shipping and shipbuilding in the city since the eighteenth century. In 1879 they established the Bristol City Line, operating a regular service from Bristol Channel ports to New York. One of the older vessels owned by the firm during the post-war period was the New York City, a 2,736 gross ton steamer built at Hill's own Bristol shipyard in 1917. This view was taken on 23 March 1947, some three years prior to her sale to Turkish owners in 1950.
