CANVAS, embroidered with coloured silks, chiefly in cross, satin and chain stitches. At the top there is a landscape with castle entitled "PENRHYN CASTLE NORTH WALES'. Below there is a chalice and cross within a garland of roses, On the one side there is a woman with ?a basket and on the other a man with stick and bundle. At the bottom, between two vases of flowers, is the inscription: "Sarah Morgan, / Aged 15 Years." There is a floral border, 19th century.
The view of Penrhyn Castle on this sampler is apparently a copy of a lithograph by W. Crane of Chester, published about 1840 by Potter & Co., Caernarfon. The same view occurs on woolwork picture (Accession No: 34.464.7). Source: Guide to the Collection of Samplers & Embroideries (Cardiff: National Museum of Wales, 1939) by F.G. Payne.
