Photograph captioned 'Stepaside Ironworks, Pembrokeshire. The westernmost ironworks in South Wales, built during the second half of the 19th century. Supplies of iron ore and coal for coke were obtainable from local levels and pits. The ruins of the blast furnace, and ancilliary buildings such as the blast engine house, provide yet another good example of the principle of building into the side of a hill to enable the preparation of raw materials to take place on the same level as the charging platform of the furnace. The passage at the back of the furnace was built to keep the dampness of the hillside away from the furnace and to accomodate the blast pipe which served the back.' Mounted on card. Made for the exhibition RECORDING WALES 3 in 1970/1971.
