Full title: Five story fall. Daniel Apila, 30, plummets toward street today after plunging from fifth-floor fire escape in New York. He survived but suffered critical injuries. Apila ignored pleas from police, telling them, "I've done something shameful... I must die."

The photograph is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the librarian of the Baltimore Sun Archives Paul M McCardell.
