British War Medal
British War Medal instituted by King George in 1919 to mark the end of the First World War. Silver medal hanging from ribbon with orange, yellow, green, blue, purple stripes. Obverse bears effigy of King George and GEORGIVS V:BRITT: OMN:REX ET IND:IMP. Reverse depicts a male figure mounted on horseback, trampling the eagle shield of the Central Powers, a skull and cross-bones. Above is the risen sun of victory.
Awarded to Private Alfred Prosser Workman who is commemorated on the Newbridge War Memorial. Alfred served with the 11th Battalion South Wales Borderers. He died on 6 September 1916 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
