A medieval gold finger ring set with an uncut sapphire.
Decorative gold ring of medieval date (AD1200-1300). it is of part-hollow construction, with a trapezoidal bezel set with a small uncut (cabochon) blue sapphire. The hoop, which is now slightly misshapen, broadens slightly at the shoulders (the hollow element), expanding in width to the bezel. The upper part of the hoop has a hollow cross-section; the lower part of the hoop is a solid band of thin rectangular cross-section.
The form of this gold finger ring was fashionable during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
