Carriage

Clarence type of coach with high driving seat, dark brown paintwork and silver plated handles. 4 inside seats facing each other, 4 windows in the front panel and 2 doors with shutters, silk blinds for all windows.

Interior The interior is upholstered in navy blue fulled wool and royal blue figured silk with a trellis and grape vine design. There is horsehair stuffing, linen stuffing covers. There are woven trimmings of broad lace with a rectangular chain motif, pasting lace with a zigzag design and seaming lace with a spiral motif all constructed with silk, wool and cotton. The front panel has a curved, silk upholstered panel, quilted with silk covered buttons. The edges are trimmed with pasting and seaming lace, the windows are above this panel and each window has a blue silk blind with a tassel in the centre and silk twisted cords to adjust the blinds. There is a pillar cover on each side of the front seat made from broad lace with silk on the back.

The doors are covered in wool trimmed with pasting lace; there is a flapped pocket on each door with a curved bottom edge, trimmed with broad lace which is gathered to fit the curves. Over the pocket hangs a glass string made from broad lace with a tassel at the end. There are also ivory fixings including a carved interior handle. On the right door there is a small pocket/holder, there are 2 holes in the same place on the other door so it is probable that there was one here as well.

The silk blinds have a simple turned edge and a wooden dowel at the end at the top they are sewn to a covered metal roller. On each side there is a quilted silk panel and a hanging holder and pillar holder made from broad lace with a silk back and soft padding, each holder also has a toggle with pompoms at the ends. On the back wall there is a quilted upper panel covered in wool with a window flap in the centre covered in silk trimmed with pasting and seaming lace. The back squab is quilted silk.

The visible parts of the seats are covered in the silk and the un-seen parts are wool, they are quilted with 8 buttons on each back seat and 7 buttons on each front seat. The seams are trimmed with seaming lace. Underneath the seats there are pleated valances made from wool with a trim of broad lace along the hem and seaming lace along the top. The valence is cut away to fit over the thresholds. The floor is bare wood in the centre but on the thresholds there is a blue floral patterned wool carpet. The ceiling is lined with wool and trimmed at the edges with broad lace.
